Holidays to Alykes take you to a friendly coastal village in Zante. Here you’ve got a good choice of shopping and nightlife, plus one of the best beaches on the north coast. This village on Zante’s northeast coast isn’t as developed as those in the south, but there’s still plenty here, from motorbike rental places to cocktail bars. Alykes is packed with charming touches, such as the old stone bridge over its river – and even a horse and carriage that will ferry you to tavernas for free.
There are wildlife-filled salt flats to explore, too, along with a sweeping golden-sand beach. Alykes Bay is one of the best stretches on Zante’s north coast. It’s 3 kilometres long and divided by a canal into Alykes and Alikanas Beach. The latter has got gentle winds that make for great windsurfing. There’s no shortage of soft, golden sand here and the clear water stays shallow even when you’ve paddled quite a way out. There are plenty of loungers and umbrellas for rent, and the beachside tavernas serve up an all-day menu of Greek and international food.
Along the Skourtis River, which separates Alykes from Alykanas, there are salt flats you can walk along – the wildlife habitat here is home to owls and geckos. Further afield – about 25 minutes away – is the capital Zante Town. The architecture flits from English to French to Venetian, a reminder of the town’s past on every corner. The opulence of Saint Dionysios Church is unmissable, while the Museum of Byzantine Art houses work from the 13th century.
